  In the earliest days of the world, when humans first learned to till the soil and grow their food, the Jade Emperor in Heaven looked down upon them with great compassion. He saw how hard they worked under the burning sun, how they struggled to feed their families, and how often they went hungry when crops failed or natural disasters struck their lands.

  Moved by their suffering, the Jade Emperor decided to bestow upon humanity a precious gift that would ensure they would never go hungry again. He created rice – a miraculous grain that would grow abundantly in the wet fields of the tropical lands, providing nutritious and filling food for all people.
