The blazing sun, while necessary for life, needed to be balanced with periods of rest and renewal. For this sacred duty, they chose a goddess of extraordinary beauty and gentle power named Nott, whose very name means “Night.”

The eldest sister is Urd, whose name means “Fate” or “That which was.” She is ancient beyond measure, old when the world was young, and in her weathered hands rest all the threads of the past. She remembers every choice ever made, every consequence ever born, and every thread of causation that has led to the present moment.

In the early days of the world, when the Jade Emperor ruled over all of Heaven and Earth with wisdom and benevolence, there lived in the celestial realm a magnificent rooster whose beauty and voice were legendary throughout the heavenly court. This rooster, known as Kim Ke, possessed feathers that shimmered like liquid gold in the divine light, a crest as red as the finest rubies, and a crow so powerful and melodious that it could be heard across vast distances.
