While other children avoided the deeper parts of the river, warning each other about the mysterious creatures said to dwell in its depths, Taro loved nothing more than swimming in its cool waters and catching fireflies along its banks at dusk.

  One autumn day, when the king was traveling through the countryside, he stopped at the miller’s humble mill to observe its operations. The miller, seeing an opportunity to impress the monarch, bowed deeply.
