The Donkey
Story by: Brothers Grimm

Once upon a time, in a prosperous kingdom surrounded by fertile farmlands and peaceful villages, there ruled a king and queen who were blessed with great wealth but cursed with great sorrow. For many years, they had longed for a child to inherit their throne and bring joy to their palace, but their prayers seemed to go unanswered.
The king was named Aldrich, a just and fair ruler who governed his people with wisdom and compassion. The queen was called Isabella, a woman of gentle nature and generous heart who was beloved by all her subjects. Despite their many blessings, the royal couple’s greatest wish remained unfulfilled.
One autumn evening, as Queen Isabella walked alone in her garden beneath a canopy of stars, she knelt beside a fountain and made a desperate plea to the heavens.
“Oh, divine powers that govern the fates of mortals,” she whispered, tears glistening in the moonlight, “grant my husband and me the gift of a child. I care not what form this blessing takes - I will love any child you see fit to give us with all my heart.”
Unknown to the queen, her words were heard by a fairy who had been watching the royal couple’s sincere devotion to each other and their people. This fairy, though kind-hearted, was also bound by ancient laws of magic that required all wishes to be granted exactly as spoken.
“Very well,” the fairy whispered from the shadows, “your wish shall be granted, noble queen. But remember - you have asked for a child regardless of form, and magic must honor the precise words of any heartfelt plea.”
Months passed, and Queen Isabella discovered that she was indeed with child. The entire kingdom rejoiced at the news, and preparations began for the arrival of the long-awaited heir to the throne.
However, when the day of birth arrived, the royal couple received a shock that tested their love and acceptance beyond anything they could have imagined. Their child was born not as a human prince, but as a donkey - though a most unusual donkey, with intelligent eyes, a gentle demeanor, and an unmistakably noble bearing.
King Aldrich stared at the small creature in amazement and confusion. “How can this be?” he asked the midwife, who was herself speechless with bewilderment.
But Queen Isabella, remembering her desperate prayer in the garden, immediately understood what had happened. “My dear husband,” she said softly, taking the donkey foal into her arms, “this is indeed our child, given to us in answer to my prayers. I asked the heavens for a child regardless of form, and this is what we have received.”
The king was troubled by this strange turn of events, but when he looked into his wife’s eyes and saw her complete acceptance and love for their unusual offspring, his own heart began to soften.
“If this is truly our son,” King Aldrich said slowly, “then we must love him as such, regardless of his appearance.”
And so the royal couple raised their donkey son with all the love and care they would have given to any prince. They named him Aurelius, and though he could not speak human words, his intelligence and noble character were evident in everything he did.
As Aurelius grew, it became clear that he possessed remarkable abilities that set him apart from ordinary donkeys. He could understand human speech perfectly, he showed extraordinary intelligence in learning courtly manners, and most remarkably of all, he had an incredible gift for music.
When the court musicians played their instruments, Aurelius would listen with rapt attention, swaying his head in perfect rhythm. When he brayed, the sounds that emerged were melodious and harmonious, unlike the harsh cries of common donkeys.
One day, when Aurelius was still young, a traveling minstrel visited the court. The man was skilled with the lute and had come to entertain the royal family with songs and melodies from distant lands.
As the minstrel played, Aurelius became so entranced by the music that he approached the musician and gently nudged the lute with his nose, producing a beautiful, clear note.
“Your Majesty,” the minstrel said in amazement, “this donkey has a natural understanding of music that I’ve never seen in any creature, man or beast!”
Queen Isabella smiled with pride. “Perhaps you could teach him to play,” she suggested. “I believe our son has many hidden talents waiting to be discovered.”
The minstrel was intrigued by this unusual request and agreed to attempt the impossible task of teaching a donkey to make music. To everyone’s astonishment, Aurelius proved to be an exceptionally gifted student.
Using his hooves and mouth with remarkable dexterity, Aurelius learned to produce beautiful melodies on various instruments. His favorite was a specially crafted lute that the court instrument maker designed specifically for his unique anatomy.
As word of the musical donkey spread throughout the kingdom, people came from far and wide to hear Aurelius perform. They were amazed not only by his musical abilities but also by the evident intelligence and sensitivity he displayed.
“There’s something almost human about that donkey,” visitors would often comment. “The way he listens, the way he responds to the music - it’s as if he has a soul just like ours.”
Years passed, and Aurelius grew into a magnificent donkey, tall and strong, with a lustrous coat and eyes that sparkled with intelligence and kindness. His musical abilities had become legendary throughout the land, and his gentle nature had won the hearts of all who knew him.
But Aurelius himself often felt a deep longing that he could not fully understand. He sensed that he was different from other donkeys, yet he also knew he was not fully human. Sometimes, late at night, he would stand at his window looking up at the stars and feeling a mysterious ache in his heart.
One evening, a grand ball was held at the palace to celebrate the king’s birthday. Nobles from neighboring kingdoms attended, along with their daughters, all elegantly dressed and eager to dance and make merry.
Aurelius watched from a balcony as the couples danced below, their graceful movements synchronized to the beautiful music played by the court orchestra. His heart filled with a longing to join them, to dance and laugh and share in the joy of human companionship.
Among the guests was a young princess named Cordelia from a nearby kingdom. Unlike the other ladies, who seemed more interested in showing off their fine clothes and jewels, Princess Cordelia appeared thoughtful and kind. When she noticed Aurelius watching from the balcony, instead of being frightened or amused, she looked at him with genuine interest and compassion.
During a break in the dancing, Princess Cordelia approached Queen Isabella and asked about the remarkable donkey she had heard so much about.
“Your Majesty,” Cordelia said respectfully, “I’ve heard that your son Aurelius is not only musical but also possesses great intelligence and sensitivity. Might I meet him?”
Queen Isabella was delighted by the princess’s genuine interest and led her to Aurelius. When the two were introduced, something magical happened. Aurelius looked into Princess Cordelia’s eyes and saw not pity or amusement, but recognition - as if she could see past his outward appearance to the noble soul within.
“Hello, Prince Aurelius,” Cordelia said softly, curtsying as she would to any royal prince. “I’ve heard that you create the most beautiful music. Would you honor me with a performance?”
Aurelius was so moved by her respectful treatment and genuine interest that he felt compelled to play his very best. He took up his special lute and began to create music so beautiful and heartfelt that it seemed to speak directly to the soul.
As he played, Princess Cordelia listened with tears in her eyes, for she could hear in the music all the longing, love, and nobility that Aurelius carried in his heart but could not express in words.
When the music ended, Princess Cordelia did something that shocked everyone present. She stepped forward and gently kissed Aurelius on his forehead, saying softly, “Thank you for sharing your beautiful soul with me.”
The moment her lips touched his forehead, a brilliant light filled the room. When the light faded, everyone gasped in amazement, for standing where Aurelius the donkey had been was a handsome young prince with kind eyes and a gentle smile.
The curse had been broken by Princess Cordelia’s recognition of his true worth and her act of pure, unconditional love.
“My son!” Queen Isabella cried, running to embrace him. “You are restored to us!”
Prince Aurelius, now able to speak, turned first to his parents with tears of joy. “My dear mother and father, thank you for loving me even when I could not take human form. Your acceptance and love sustained me through all the lonely years.”
Then he turned to Princess Cordelia, taking her hands in his. “Sweet princess, you saw my true self when others saw only a donkey. Your kindness and love have given me back my human form, but more importantly, they have shown me the power of looking beyond appearances to the heart within.”
Princess Cordelia smiled radiantly. “I loved you for your music, your gentleness, and your noble spirit. These qualities shine just as brightly now that you have your human form, but they were always there for anyone with eyes to see.”
The fairy who had granted Queen Isabella’s original wish appeared in the great hall, smiling with satisfaction.
“Prince Aurelius,” the fairy said, “you have learned the greatest lesson of all - that true nobility comes not from appearance or even royal blood, but from kindness, intelligence, and the ability to touch others’ hearts. Princess Cordelia recognized this truth and loved you for who you truly were, not what you appeared to be.”
King Aldrich stepped forward, his voice filled with emotion. “This experience has taught us all that love and acceptance must be freely given, regardless of outward appearances. Our son was always a prince in his heart and character, whether he wore the form of a donkey or a man.”
Prince Aurelius and Princess Cordelia were married in a magnificent ceremony that was attended by people from all over the kingdom. The wedding was particularly special because Prince Aurelius performed beautiful music during the ceremony, playing the very lute that had been his companion during his years as a donkey.
The couple ruled together with wisdom and compassion, always remembering the lesson that true beauty and worth come from the character within, not the appearance without. They established schools and programs to help people who were different or disadvantaged, ensuring that everyone in their kingdom would be valued for their inner qualities rather than judged by their outward appearance.
And whenever young people in the kingdom felt discouraged because they felt different or unaccepted, they would remember the story of Prince Aurelius and Princess Cordelia, and know that true love sees the heart rather than the surface, and that nobility of character is far more valuable than any crown or title.
Years later, when Prince Aurelius and Princess Cordelia had children of their own, they made sure to teach them this important lesson: “Never judge others by their appearance, for the most beautiful souls may sometimes come in unexpected forms. And remember that the music you create with your life - through kindness, wisdom, and love - is more important than any song you could ever play.”
The special lute that Prince Aurelius had played during his years as a donkey was preserved in the palace as a reminder that beautiful music, like true character, comes from the heart and can touch souls regardless of the form of the one who creates it.
Moral: True nobility and beauty come from character, kindness, and the ability to touch others’ hearts, not from outward appearance or royal birth.
