The North Wind and the Sun
Traditional Fable by: Aesop

High above the earth, where the clouds gather and the weather is born, the North Wind and the Sun were having an argument. They had been watching the world below and debating which of them was the more powerful.
“I am clearly the strongest force in nature,” boasted the North Wind, his voice rumbling like thunder. “When I blow, I can uproot the mightiest trees, tear the roofs off houses, and send ships scurrying for harbor. Nothing can stand against my power!”
The Sun smiled warmly, her golden rays dancing with gentle confidence. “Strength isn’t always about force, my friend,” she replied calmly. “True power often comes from gentleness and patience, not from bluster and violence.”
The North Wind huffed with annoyance, sending a chill through the air. “Gentleness? Patience? Those are just words that the weak use to make themselves feel better! Real power is about making things happen quickly and decisively. I can make any creature on earth do exactly what I want them to do!”
“Can you really?” asked the Sun with an amused twinkle in her eye. “I think there are many things that gentle persuasion can accomplish that brute force cannot.”
Their argument might have continued forever, but just then they noticed a traveler walking along the road far below. He was a merchant returning from market, wearing a thick, warm cloak to protect himself from the cool morning air.
“Perfect!” exclaimed the North Wind. “Here’s our chance to settle this argument once and for all. Do you see that traveler down there with the cloak? Let’s have a contest to see which of us can make him take it off. Whoever succeeds first will be proven the more powerful.”
The Sun considered this proposal thoughtfully. “Very well,” she agreed. “But let’s make it fair. You try first, and then I’ll have my turn.”
“Agreed!” said the North Wind eagerly. “But I warn you, this contest will be over very quickly. Watch and learn what real power can do!”
The North Wind immediately began to gather his strength. He drew in great breaths of air from the far reaches of the arctic, building up his force until he was ready to unleash his full fury upon the unsuspecting traveler below.
Then, with a tremendous roar, the North Wind released his power. He sent gusts of cold, fierce wind rushing down toward the traveler, howling and moaning as they tore across the landscape.
The sudden blast of wind caught the traveler completely by surprise. His cloak billowed out behind him like a sail, and he stumbled forward, struggling to keep his balance against the powerful gusts.
But instead of removing his cloak, the traveler did exactly the opposite. He pulled it more tightly around himself, wrapping it securely and holding it closed with both hands.
“Just getting started!” shouted the North Wind, and he blew even harder. The wind became so strong that it bent the trees nearly to the ground and sent leaves and dust swirling through the air in great spirals.
The traveler leaned into the wind, his cloak streaming out behind him, but he clutched it even more firmly than before. The colder and more violent the wind became, the more tightly he wrapped himself in the warm protection of his cloak.
The North Wind was becoming frustrated. He had used more force than he had ever used before, but the traveler showed no signs of removing his cloak. In fact, he seemed to be holding onto it more desperately with each gust.
“I just need to blow harder!” the North Wind declared, and he summoned every bit of his strength for one final, tremendous blast.
The wind that followed was so powerful that it shook the very ground. Trees creaked and groaned, and small stones were lifted from the road and sent flying through the air. The traveler was nearly knocked off his feet, but still he held fast to his cloak, wrapping it around himself like armor against the assault.
Finally, exhausted from his tremendous effort, the North Wind had to stop. He had used all his strength, and still the traveler wore his cloak.
“Your turn,” the North Wind said grudgingly to the Sun, panting from his exertions. “But I don’t see how your gentle approach will succeed where my power has failed.”
The Sun said nothing in reply. Instead, she simply began to shine. At first, her rays were soft and gentle, barely warming the air. The fierce, cold wind gradually died away, replaced by a pleasant, mild breeze.
The traveler, who had been hunched over against the wind, slowly straightened up. He looked around in surprise at the sudden change in weather, loosening his tight grip on his cloak just slightly.
The Sun continued to shine, gradually increasing her warmth. Her golden rays felt wonderful after the harsh, cold wind. The traveler’s tense muscles began to relax, and he started walking at a more comfortable pace.
As the Sun’s warmth continued to spread, the traveler began to feel quite comfortable. The morning air, which had been so cold and biting just moments before, now felt pleasant and mild. He loosened his grip on his cloak and let it fall naturally around his shoulders.
The Sun increased her warmth just a little more, sending down rays that felt like a gentle embrace. The traveler was now feeling quite warm indeed. He undid the fasteners of his cloak and let it hang loosely from his shoulders.
Still the Sun continued her gentle work, shining with steadily increasing warmth but never becoming harsh or unpleasant. Soon the traveler began to feel too warm with his heavy cloak on.
Finally, with a contented sigh, the traveler stopped walking, removed his cloak entirely, and folded it over his arm. He looked up at the sky with gratitude, enjoying the pleasant warmth of the sunshine on his face.
The North Wind watched in amazement as the traveler continued on his way, carrying his cloak instead of wearing it.
“How did you do that?” he asked the Sun in wonder. “I used all my strength, all my power, and I couldn’t make him remove his cloak. Yet you succeeded without any effort at all!”
The Sun smiled gently. “The secret,” she explained, “is that I didn’t try to force him to do anything. Instead of fighting against him, I simply made it pleasant and comfortable for him to do what I wanted. When you were harsh and violent, he naturally protected himself by holding his cloak more tightly. But when I was gentle and warm, he was happy to remove it on his own.”
The North Wind was quiet for a long moment, thinking about what he had learned. “I see,” he said finally. “I was so focused on showing my strength that I forgot about being effective. I made the traveler want to resist me.”
“Exactly,” said the Sun. “Sometimes the gentlest approach is also the most powerful. Kindness and warmth can accomplish things that force and violence never could.”
From that day forward, the North Wind remembered the lesson he had learned. While he still had his role to play in the changing of the seasons, he understood that there were times when a gentle breeze was more effective than a howling gale.
Moral: Gentleness and persuasion are often more effective than force and aggression. People are more likely to respond positively to kindness than to hostility. Sometimes the softest approach achieves the greatest results.
